NEVADO DEL RUIZ VOLCANO
Ruiz Volcano or well-known as Nevado del Ruiz is an active volcano since 2010. It is located in the central mountain range of the Andes in the North Volcanic Complex, and it's in the jurisdiction of the Coffee Axis including the department of Tolima. Also, it covers an area of 58.300 hectares and heights which start from 8530.1 feets to 17162 feets over the sea level.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE RUIZ VOLCANO
This stunning peak is located in the Andes Mountains and is considered as one of the highest peaks of South America with an approximately height of 17486.8 feets. Its famous by housing the Andean condor 🦅 and housing a great variety of flora and fauna
Due to its history, over the time, this volcano has been entitled with names such as Mesa de Herveo or how it was called in the pre-columbian times by the natives who refer to this as Tama which means ‘’Padre mayor o grande’’, Kumanday ‘’Cerro Blanco’’ among others names
Apart from its beauty, it's well-known by the Armero Tragedy which is considered as Colombia’s worst natural hazard-induced disaster which produced the deadliest lahar ever recorded in the XX Century which took place the November the 13th of 1985 when the volcano erupted, killing more than 25,000 people in Armero—a town of 30,000 inhabitants—making it the worst natural disaster in the history of Colombia.
According to the SGC, a yellow/level 3 alert means the volcano is currently active with changes in activity, but no indications of an imminent eruption

HOW TO GET TO THE RUIZ VOLCANO 🚙?
To get to the Ruiz Volcano, the first thing we had to do was to go to Manizales. Once we arrived to Manizales, the travel agency tools us to make the trip to the Ruiz Volcano
We want to clarify that to get to the entrance of the Ruiz Volcano, you won't be able to find public transportation.
In every mile of the trip, we left the buildings behind, and we immersed even deeper in the flora and fauna of the National Natural Park Los Nevados until we could see the beautiful frailejones🍃. In order to acclimatize our bodies, the guide recommended to us to open the windows of the car and when we did so we could already feel the cold.

-> LAGUNA NEGRA
On our way to the Ruiz Volcano, we took the time to make some stops and observe different landscapes like the Laguna Negra. This is a majestic glacier lagoon quite near to the Ruiz Volcano. It's a resting place for migratory species such as wild birds and ducks.

After taking some photos in this beautiful lagoon, we continued with our trip to our last stop in the place called ‘’El Arbolito’’. When the place is totally clear, you could observe the imposing volcano from ‘’El Arbolito’’

After that, we arrived at the Nevado del Ruiz’s access. Take into account that this place has a schedule for the ticket sales. Further, once you pay for the access, you will have to attend a 30 minutes-conversatory.
PRICES TO ACCESS TO THE RUIZ VOLCANO
Into the National Natural Park Los Nevados, is not allowed to camp nor access pets .To be able to access to the National Natural Parks, we had to pay the following items:

Entrance to Los Nevados Park in 2024 🎟: over 5 years old and under 25 years old $14,000 COP. Adults from 25 years old to 70 years old $25,000 COP, and foreigners $61,000 COP.

Medical and rescue insurance ⛑: is mandatory to be able to access to any natural park of Colombia.

Tourist Guide🧔: To access to the Ruiz Volcano, you may do it with your guide, and its allowed to make this trip by car.
Important: The Ruiz Volcano is in a yellow/level 3 alert means that it is allowed to make the trip inside Los Nevados Park by car. This recommendation is declared with the intention to evacuate the people faster.
HIKING ROUTES INSIDE THE RUIZ VOLCANO 🚗
The tour lasts approximately 3 hours, considering that the route is done by car, since the Ruiz Volcano is in yellow level 3. And it is done in order to prevent any emergency that may arise. Some of the stop we made were the followings:

Now, we will show you the map of the places we visited at the Ruiz Volcano. This route is done by car, and we are going to walk through those places highlighted in the map.
-> AGUACERALES ZONE
It has this name because water is constantly released from the rock and falls through the vegetation found on the mountain.
-> ARENALES ZONE
In this sector there is a terrace where you can enter and see the immensity of the valley, there you will also find a small cafeteria ☕️.
-> TUMBAS ZONE
Also called the desert of the soledad. History tells us that this was a place of pilgrimage for the indigenous communities that inhabited the lowlands. In this place, we can observe one of the immense craters through which the avalanche occurred on November the 13th in 1985 destroying and burying the Armero town completely.
This is the last available place to enter, since the yellow alert in which the Ruiz Volcano is located, tourists are not allowed to enter until higher up.
